Charlie’s Journey (2): Lessons in Wisdom and Presence

Embracing the Wisdom of Charlie: Lessons Learned in the Shadow of Terminal Illness

Charlie is a fount of wisdom, and one of the many lessons he has tried to teach me since we met is to slow down and just enjoy being present together. As a chronically busy person, I hadn’t made time yet to learn or fully incorporate this. Now, I am his eager and willing student.

Charlie has always been a connoisseur of lap time, and at the beginning of January, he developed a new, sweet habit. Charlie now sneaks under the covers in the very early morning hours and snuggles in tight for as long as I can stay in bed with him. It is so endearing!

During this time especially, I find peace and solace in his purrs. The way he readjusts himself, rests his chin on my arm, then falls back to sleep, makes my heart melt. I often feel his light breath on my cheek because he snugs in so close to me during these precious morning hours. I know I will be able to recall that specific feeling for the rest of my life.

Prioritizing Presence

I’m beyond grateful to be in a place in my business where I can assign morning visits to a team who I trust completely and know I can rely on, so I can take more time with Charlie. Nights belong to Gunther, as far as Charlie is concerned, so these morning snuggles have been precious to me.

When I was grappling with hiring a pet sitting team, I was afraid I could not give up control and trust others with my business’ reputation and the animals for whom I care so deeply. Charlie quickly and simply got me past that hurdle. He imprinted the importance of presence on my heart by claiming mornings for us. He embodies being, not doing, and is a consummate companion. He reminds us that presence is not just something to mindfully strive for, but a way of being that happens naturally when you let the rest of the world fall away for a moment.

Discovering Wisdom in Quiet Moments

In the quiet moments spent with Charlie, amidst the backdrop of his terminal illness, I've discovered a wealth of wisdom hidden in the simplicity of his presence. As I shed the trappings of busyness and ambition at the start of each day, I've become attuned to the subtle nuances of Charlie's essence—the way he seeks solace in our company, the gentle rise and fall of his breath as he snuggles close. In Charlie's eyes, I see a reflection of unconditional love and acceptance, a reminder that life's true beauty lies not in grand achievements, but in the quiet moments of connection and belonging.

Through Charlie's illness, I've learned to embrace the fleeting nature of time, to cherish each moment as a precious gift to be savored and treasured. As we navigate the final chapters of Charlie's journey, I'm filled with gratitude for the profound lessons he continues to teach me—the importance of presence, the power of love, and the beauty of embracing life's inevitable impermanence.

In Charlie's quiet strength and unwavering grace, I find solace, knowing that his legacy will live on in the timeless lessons he leaves behind.

With love and gratitude in my heart, I am off to bed. Charlie has climbed into my lap now that Gunther is asleep. As I am typing, he has found a way to rest his cheek upon my arm—a sure sign that he’s ready for bed and my undivided attention. I’m so fortunate for these little moments!
